Diabetes Support Group meets monthly at Newton Medical Center
10-8-09 A newly formed Diabetes Support Group at Newton Medical Center drew more than 30 people with a personal interest in the disease to the first meeting on Oct. 6.

Seth Bernstein, Southern California optometrist diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at age 27, talked about how to live successfully with diabetes.
Dr. Bernstein, who has taken insulin for more than 22 years, explained how to meet the disease with optimism, how to re-frame thinking about living with the disease, and most importantly, how to be in control of your life.
Lindsey Elder, RN, a recent Bethel College School of Nursing graduate and new diabetes educator at the hospital, organized the event. She arranged for Dr. Bernstein’s visit to NMC at no cost to the hospital. Pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis sponsored his appearance in Newton.
Elder, a McPherson native, is joined by Leslie Mack, certified diabetes educator, in hosting the Diabetes Support Group the first Thursday of each month. The group meets at 7 p.m. in the north end of the NMC cafeteria. The meeting is free and open to the public.
There is an urgent need for diabetes education and support groups in a wide area of south central Kansas, according to Mack, who manages the accredited clinical diabetes education program at NMC. Mack and Elder counsel patients from Saline, McPherson, Marion, Reno, Butler, Sedgwick and Harvey counties.
