Family practice in Valley Center becomes Medical Plaza of Valley Center

Effective Sept. 1, the sole family practice physician in Valley Center, Kan., and his staff become “Medical Plaza of Valley Center,” a part of the Newton Medical Center Family.
Russell Horn, D.O., and his same staff will continue to provide medical services at their office at 122 N. Park Street in Valley Center. The telephone number remains (316) 755-1511.

“I will also be adding Newton Medical Center to my hospital affiliations on this date,” Dr. Horn explains in a letter to his patients. “The time is right for me to move in this direction, and I know that you will be as pleased as I am to have service, if needed, performed at Newton Medical Center,” he said.

Dr. Horn invites his current patients to attend an open house at Newton Medical Center, 600 Medical Center Drive, Newton, Kan., on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., to get acquainted with the hospital staff, to meet his physician colleagues, and to have a guided tour of Newton Medical Center.

The hospital’s executive staff, managers, Dr. Horn and his staff will greet patients in the medical center’s main lobby. From there they will be taken on guided tours of the hospital to see places such as the admitting area, laboratory, X-ray and the emergency department. The hospital will serve refreshments.

“Our mission is to excel in providing health care by understanding and responding to the individual needs of those we serve. We have worked extensively with Dr. Horn to understand the needs of Valley Center and believe that we have put in place a plan with which the community will be well pleased,” said Steve Kelly, president and CEO of Newton Medical Center.

“Our vision is to be the community's choice for health care, so we offer our services in a way that allows Dr. Horn to provide the Valley Center community with a choice. We are a hospital that accepts all insurances so that patients need not be concerned about that part of their care. I believe that Dr. Horn’s and Valley Center’s values are a natural fit for the NMC family, and we welcome the opportunity to meet their needs and earn their trust,” Dr. Kelly said.

Dr. Horn points to the medical center’s willingness to develop and invest in a Hospitalist Program as a key factor in his decision to affiliate with Newton Medical Center.

The Society of Hospital Medicine defines hospitalists as: “Physicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Their activities include patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to hospital medicine. Additionally, a hospitalist oversees emergency department patients being admitted into the hospital. The hospitalist directs, manages and reports an inpatient's conditions to the inpatient's primary care physician.”

Newton Medical Center employs two physician hospitalists: Drs. Doyle Detweiler and Carrie Bateman. They provide care in a timely manner for physicians practicing outside the immediate Newton area, such as Dr. Horn.

“It is important to the referring physicians to know they will get their patients back upon discharge, because a hospitalist may not have a private practice,” Dr. Detweiler said.

In the letter to his patients, Dr. Horn provides these directions: “From Valley Center, you can go straight north on US-81. At the first stoplight, turn right. Yes, it’s that easy! Then turn left at the first driveway and park in the main parking lot of the hospital. There is a canopy with a sign on it that says, ‘hospital entrance.’ It will take you about 17 minutes to drive from my office location to the hospital.”
