Women’s Center

The Women’s Center at NMC is in the Medical Office Plaza at Newton Medical Center. We offer advanced imaging services for women, allowing them to complete their medical care near their physician and close to home.

Services include digital mammography, sonography, bone densitometry, stereotactic breast biopsies and breast ultrasounds.

The Women’s Center has used digital mammography since 2003. Digital mammography offers high-resolution images and a large field of view to enable radiologists to see more detail within the soft tissues, leading to more-accurate diagnoses. The Women’s Center also offers Computer Aided Detection (CAD) with your annual mammogram. This system provides assistance to the radiologist in the detection of abnormalities on your mammogram. The Women’s Center provides service for your annual mammogram, as well as any follow-up that is necessary to complete your care.

Sonography is offered at the Women’s Center. Obstetrical, gynecological, pelvic, abdominal and breast ultrasound exams are completed at the Women’s Center. Breast biopsy procedures can be completed using ultrasound technology.

The bone densitometry equipment uses small amounts of radiation to determine bone strength. The bone density test is a fast, painless and safe test that helps physicians treat patients who are at risk for the development of osteoporosis.

If an abnormality is detected within your breast, the Women’s Center can provide you with the option of having a stereotactic biopsy. A stereotactic biopsy is a minimally invasive option to sample tissue from the abnormality. This procedure requires no stitches and virtually leaves no scarring while enabling you to return to your normal activities after the procedure.

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves that cannot be heard by humans to look at the breast. If a breast lump is found during an exam or something abnormal is seen on a mammogram, an ultrasound can help show whether it is a solid mass or a cyst. It can also be used to check for a growth in the breast if a woman has clear or bloody nipple discharge or to guide a needle during a breast biopsy. Ultrasound can help show noncancerous growths, such as cysts (fluid-filled sacs), fibroadenomas (noncancerous solid growths) and lipomas (noncancerous fatty lumps that can occur anywhere in the body, including the breasts), as well as breast cancers.
