Generations Unit: Geriatric/Psychiatric Care


The Generations Unit at Newton Medical Center is a program designed to evaluate and treat mental illnesses associated with aging. We strive to provide excellent care centered on the individual needs of each patient. Each patient has a private room.

The Generations Unit is for people ages 55 and older who are experiencing any of the following:

  • Change in cognitive status — new onset or increase in disorientation, delusions, hallucinations, etc.
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Self-destructive behavior
  • Assaultive or aggressive behavior
  • Changes in sleep/appetite/mood
  • Difficulty performing everyday activities and resistive to help with everyday activities, such as grooming and hygiene
  • Alcohol or drug abuse

Mental illnesses commonly treated:

  • Alzheimer’s
  • Dementia
  • Major depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Substance abuse

Program selection:

  • Medically stable
  • Geriatric/psychiatric nursing care required 24-hours a day and close supervision by a physician
  • Potential to improve functional skills
