Maternal/Child Unit

At Newton Medical Center's Maternal/Child Unit, we're all about babies!

That’s why more and more moms and dads are choosing us for that very special occasion – the birth of their baby.
Everything from our birthing rooms to our specially trained staff is there to surround each family with nurturing and support. Our Family Friendly care is there to ensure the comfort, welfare and safety of mother, baby and dad.

Newton Medical Center Maternal/Child Unit is a very special place for couples and their newborns. We encourage couples to stop in, take a tour of the unit and get acquainted with our nursing staff before the baby’s birth. Then you'll know what to expect. No need for an appointment, just drop in when it's convenient for both of you.

You'll have a chance to check out our birthing rooms – large, comfy, homelike rooms – complete with rocking chair!

Also available is our surgical delivery room for moms who will deliver by Caesarean.

The Special Care Nursery, also known as a Level II nursery, offers special equipment and is staffed by registered nurses trained to care for moderate- to high-risk infants. This nursery provides our families with an added level of reassurance.

You'll find our comfortable lounge for families and the ambiance throughout the unit to be friendly and welcoming to your family and visitors.

Before the baby’s birth, be sure to check out our childbirth education classes where you'll learn about breathing, labor and delivery, comfort options, care of the newborn and other valuable information.

We offer a five-week course during the week, classes on weekends, classes for very young mothers and refresher classes for those who have given birth. We also have classes involving baby’s siblings. Instructors are registered nurses who have additional training in childbirth education. The classes are open to any expectant mother and partner, regardless of the hospital chosen for the birth.

Before the birth you also can visit with our certified lactation consultants and ask any questions you may have about breastfeeding. This consultation is free for mothers who deliver at Newton Medical Center.

Before the birth, mothers are closely monitored by nurses. In fact, when you're in labor you’ll have the benefit of one-on-one nursing care to give you that extra security and reassurance. Our special fetal heart monitor that you may wear during labor lets us keep tabs on baby while allowing you to walk around – and even take a soothing warm shower.

After the birth, stay in your own comfy room with baby and dad and others you want to be with you during this special time. And, you can keep your newborn in your room with you as much as you want. It's all up to you!

You’ll have the constant attention and support of our specially trained nursing staff and our superb staff of OB/GYN physicians who are there to care for you, give you support, answer your questions – get you ice cream! – and just be there for you.

While you’re resting comfortably with baby, physicians and nurses are busy conferring on your care plan.

Your progress and baby's are carefully watched and discussed to provide you and your baby the best care ever.

Every infant born at Newton Medical Center undergoes a thorough hearing test to detect any hearing problems as early as possible.

For at-risk babies who may need quick attention once they return home, our nursing staff instructs those mothers in infant CPR using a lifelike
doll.

Thanks to Newton Medical Center's technology, laptops with wireless capabilities can be used in the hospital.

Through our Web Nursery program, parents may post photos of the newborn and other pertinent information on a special password-protected Web Nursery page. Relatives and friends who can’t come to visit can see and read about your joyful occasion on this page. Photos of the newborn and other items also can be purchased through the site.

Our support and education continue even after you leave the hospital with your infant. You may schedule an appointment with our certified lactation consultants. These free sessions are available to every mother delivering at Newton Medical Center. Dads are welcome, too!

Our Best Beginnings program offers a free weight-check clinic for babies after they've gone home. This walk-in clinic is available from 12-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Maternal Child Unit.
Mothers can ask questions about baby's care, breastfeeding or even taking care of herself. Our goal is to help you nurture and nourish your baby so that you both will be healthy and happy! This is available for babies up to one year of age.

We want to make sure baby stays as safe as possible when out and about. NMC is a child safety seat inspection station. We make appointments to check your car seat on safety, use and installation.

Physicians who specialize in obstetrical care as well as general practitioners deliver babies at Newton Medical Center. And all Maternal/Child nurses are specially trained to deliver expert, compassionate care and support to our mothers and babies. Get to know them here.
