MRI Service
A new "openness" is causing less anxiety among Newton Medical Center patients undergoing an MRI exam, and more patients are able to benefit from this important diagnostic technology.
|
It's all due to the medical center's new MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) with its "line of sight" design featuring a larger space on which to lie and four open sides.
Other MRIs are very enclosed and can cause patients to feel claustrophobic. This new OPART Open MRI overcomes that problem, and helps ensure a successful scan, which is critical.
The new design also accommodates those who found the older tube-like machines too narrow for comfort. It even allows a parent to sit beside their child to read a book or just hold their hand during the exam. Most patients are able to listen to music or the radio through headphones. Some patients even bring their own CDs!
Anxiety and the narrow confines of other tube-like models often prevent some patients from undergoing an MRI which provides important diagnostic information that cannot be obtained any other way except through surgery.
MRI technology relies upon a powerful magnet 7,000 times stronger than the magnetic force of the earth.
During an exam, the hydrogen atoms in the patient's body react to the magnetic field. The computer reads signals from the atom formation and reconstructs data in to detailed images of the body's interior.??
