Safety & Security

Our policies and special surveillance equipment help ensure a safe, secure and clean environment for patients, visitors and employees. Please report any unusual or suspicious conditions to your nurse.

Smoking
Newton Medical Center provides a tobacco-free campus. Tobacco use is not permitted inside or outside any building or on any hospital-owned property.

Safety in Bed
You may need to stay in bed and limit your activities. Medications, diet changes and your medical condition may make you less steady on your feet. Your nurse will advise you about your activity restrictions and ask that you summon assistance by pressing your nurse call light.

To help prevent slips and falls
• Ask for help to reach something slightly out of reach rather than stretching and risking a fall out of bed.
• Be careful in the bathroom. The floor may be wet from the shower. A nurse call button is also located in each patient bathroom.

Call Bells
A nurse call system is located in the bed's side rails. Ask your nurse if you need a hand-held call bell.

Severe Weather
In case of severe weather, staff will be alerted. It may be necessary to move you to a place of greater safety. Follow the instructions of your nurse who is familiar with storm safety precautions.

Fire
In case of a fire, don't panic; remain calm. Our staff has been trained in emergency procedures and will assist you.

If the fire is in your room, leave and shut the door. Report the fire to a staff member right away.

If a fire is somewhere else in the building, please stay in your room until a staff member comes to assist you. Visitors also should remain in your room.

If the fire is directly outside your room, close the door and wait for assistance. Make yourself visible at the window to rescue personnel.

Do not prop open doors. They are fire and smoke barriers.

Valuables
If you brought any valuables with you, please send them home with a friend or relative. If that is not possible, ask to have them locked in the hospital safe. Your room cannot be locked and we do not take responsibility for loss or theft of personal property or cash.

Personal Security
All Newton Medical Center personnel wear photo identification badges. If you are unable to identify a staff member or are suspicious of someone, ask for identification or call your nurse.
