Dr. Doyle Detweiler – Newton’s first hospitalist
Internist Dr. Doyle Detweiler recently transferred his private Newton practice to serve as the first hospitalist for Newton Medical Center.
Dr. Detweiler’s job as a hospitalist is to attend to patients at the hospital when their own doctor might be unavailable, making it easier for Newton Medical Center to offer the highest level of patient care, as well as allowing doctors more flexiblity in scheduling.
“A hospitalist is a physician whose primary role is to provide medical care to hospitalized patients. I’m here on site at Newton Medical Center full-time and no longer maintain my own clinic,” Dr. Detweiler said.
“From the patient’s perspective, having a hospitalist on staff insures faster physician care. Because I’m here, I can reach patients more quickly during urgent situations than doctors who need to leave their clinics and come to the hospital,” he said.
Hospitalists are physicians whose primary focus is the general medical care of all patients in the hospital. Typical activities include patient care, teaching, research and leadership. At Newton Medical Center, Dr. Detweiler also oversees the Emergency Department. He also serves on Newton Medical Center’s board of trustees.
“For physicians, I’m here to help them manage their clinic practices. I can make rounds for them, do admissions and help care for their patients when they are at conferences or on vacation. Consequently, doctors field fewer phone calls and experience fewer interruptions in their office schedules. I’m also available to consult with physicians and to offer opinions and insights in patient care decisions’” Dr. Detweiler said.
“Everyone here at Newton Medical Center is great to work with – nurses, techs – they all are very hard working and easy to work with. And the other physicians in the area are wonderful. You couldn’t ask for more.”
