NEWTON, Kan. — Newton Medical Center’s high-tech laboratory has a matched pair of Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Vitros® 5600 chemistry analyzers now providing 96 different tests with more-rapid turnaround times and precision accuracy. The laboratory began using the twin analyzers, affectionately called Alpha and Omega, in April 2011.
In addition to routine chemistry tests (e.g., glucose, sodium, cholesterol), these analyzers perform immunochemistry tests (thyroid and vitamin B12 tests); esoteric tests (tumor markers, such as PSA and CEA, and cardiac markers, such as troponin); infectious disease tests (hepatitis); and hormone tests. Because about 45,000 test results are reported from these analyzers each month, they are considered the laboratory “workhorses.”
The Newton Community Association gifted a StatSpin® Express 3 centrifuge as support equipment for the chemistry analyzers. This equipment reduces specimen processing from 10 minutes to 3 minutes, which allows critical results to become available more quickly for physician decision-making and treatment.
In addition to the analyzers, recent technological additions to the laboratory include fully automated blood-bank testing, enhanced coagulation testing, microbial identification and susceptibility testing and blood culture testing.
The Newton Medical Center Clinical Laboratory continues to earn respect as a cutting-edge laboratory in Kansas. It provides accurate testing with an extensive test menu. Diagnostic and wellness evaluations are performed in a timely, cost-effective manner — your charitable gifts are hard at work.
